To Capture a Shaking Earth

Dutch journalist and photographer Kjeld Duits specializes in street fashion and natural disasters. One day he shoots the latest fashion trends in Tokyo’s Harajuku, the next day he may be on a plane to an area that was just flattened by an earthquake. He faces many of the same problems that every creative person struggles with. How do you get your message across, and how do you get your material to your client? But for Kjeld, these issues are a bit more extreme. How do you portray in one image the suffering of tens, and often hundreds of thousands of people? And how do you send your files when you are in a completely destroyed isolated village in the middle of the Himalayas, without phone, internet and electricity? Showing some of his actual photographs, Kjeld explained what he looks for in his images, and the technology and tools he uses in the field.
