From independent to corporate
and back again
British designer Garry Mouat charted his experiences between 1983 and 2002, as he moved from fine artist to graphic designer following the client brief, closing the circle as he moves once again towards self-initiated projects. A meditation on Japan as a source of inspiration and creativity.
About the presenter
An Associate lecturer for over 6 years on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, Garry Mouat is currently on sabbatical in Osaka, conducting research for an MA in Printmaking, due to commence in the summer of 2008. After twenty years as a London-based artist operating as creative director, freelance designer and fine artist, Garry has become a specialist in printed literature.
His promotional designs for Mercedes-Benz won Gold and Silver WorldMedals at the New York Festivals in 2000 and featured in a British Council touring exhibition in 2003. He has designed campaigns and identities for the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes and London's Transport Museum. He has created numerous identities for leading musicians and artists, from the Rolling Stones and Peter Gabriel's Realworld records to Yes, Ron Arad and A.R. Penck. He set the style for hundreds of books as design director of the publisher B T Batsford. As a fine artist he has produced many paintings, prints and objects, exhibiting in Britain and Europe.
