Designing Environments for Learning: From Rats in a Cage to Social Constructivism.
In this presentation Prof. Richard Harrison from Kobe University looked at how different educational theories have influenced the design of learning environments, and the different kinds of learning experiences these environments offer. The main focus was on how design, based on implicit educational theories and metaphors, plays a crucial role in education, contrasting the mainstream teacher centered (behaviorist) approach to learning with new learner centered (social constructivist) approaches. He presented concrete examples of both physical and virtual learning environments, discussing the theoretical and pedagogical implication of their design features. This blog has a good summary of the presentation contents.
