Stuart Kerr gave a great presentation about the trials and tribulations of being a problem solver and the methods he uses. Sometimes working directly for major clients, sometimes through agencies, his role as a 3d designer requires fast, first-rate visualisation and communication skills. In the era of computer graphics, Stuart talked about using CAD as a helpful aid, but also about knowing the right situation to use it. As designers we often aren't given time to produce finely polished renders, he said, and clients can often read them too literally. In an age where jumping to the final image is so luring, the ability to draw well can really open up a discussion and engage even the most visually-challenged of clients.
About the presenter
Stuart Kerr is a freelance designer based in Osaka. Having worked for major advertising agencies and architecture offices in the UK, Stuart now specialises in shop and exhibition design. The scope of his work extends to packaging, sign and POS (point of sale) design. He now works for clients in both the UK and Japan, most recently Wedgwood, Japan. Past clients include Bentley Motors, Sony Playstation, Forbo Nairn, Burn Stewart Distillers and Orange Telecom. Whilst studying product design at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland, and UIAH in Finland, he won a D&AD award for packaging design. Stuart is also an avid cyclist.
